Wouldn’t it be nice to ditch your razor and tweezers for a while, or even forever? Having smooth, hairless skin is a simple luxury that can boost your confidence. That’s why getting waxing treatments is the way to go, especially as the summer months approach and more skin will be showing.
You likely already know that hair doesn’t grow back very quickly following a waxing treatment, but here’s what else you need to know about the entire process of waxing — before, during, and after.
WHAT TO EXPECT BEFORE
In the two weeks leading up to your waxing treatment, don’t shave or pluck hairs so you’ll have long enough hair for waxing to be efficient. In the days prior, avoid direct sunlight as tanned skin can be more sensitive to waxing. The day before, gently exfoliate your skin to remove skin cells to make waxing even more effective.
As you head to your treatment, wear loose clothing so you don’t have to put tight clothing over the waxed area. Tight clothing can cause friction and discomfort, so choose nice, breathable fabrics that won’t cling to your skin, like cotton or silk.
WHAT TO EXPECT DURING
At the start of a waxing treatment, the treatment area will be cleaned to remove oils and any products, like scented lotion or deodorant, that could interfere with the wax. Warm wax will be applied in the direction of hair growth and pulled off in the opposite direction to remove hair at the root, leaving you smooth and hairless.
The pain of the wax being pulled off depends on the treated area and personal tolerance. While waxing can be uncomfortable, it is tolerable. In general, sensitive areas where thicker hair grows can be more painful to wax, such as waxes for bikini, brazilian, underarm, lips, and brows.
WHAT TO EXPECT AFTER
After your waxing treatment, expect that your skin might have some mild irritation and redness for a day or so. For best results and to maintain healthy skin, don’t exfoliate or shave soon after your appointment. This can cause ingrown hairs, discomfort, and itching.
To avoid hyperpigmentation, avoid direct sun exposure following a waxing treatment. In order to not irritate your skin, avoid high temperatures outside and when bathing, and don’t wear scented products like perfumes, lotions, and scented deodorant. To keep your skin smooth and hydrated, moisturize regularly.
New hair growth begins around three or four weeks after your treatment, so we recommend rebooking waxing treatments every four to six weeks to keep up with hair growth. View our waxing treatments and book your appointment with us at Fort Wayne Plastic Surgery & Aesthetics today to get summer-ready.
