Forming a skincare regimen involves finding the right products for you, and then figuring out what to use and when. Your skin type helps determine what products you should use, but the order and time of day you use products matter, too.
Your skincare routine should differ in the morning compared to at night — here’s how.
SKINCARE IN THE MORNING
Starting your day with a skincare regimen is all about protecting your skin from the sun, dirt, air pollution, and anything else you face in daily life. Follow the rule of always applying your products in order from thinnest to thickest so products can absorb into your skin and give you the most benefits possible.
In the morning, start by washing your face with a cleanser. Cleansing prevents your pores from getting clogged by makeup, dirt, and everything your skin is exposed to day to day. About two or three times a week, exfoliate your skin after cleansing to remove dead skin cells.
Next, apply a toner with a cotton pad or ball. Toner removes any dirt or makeup that your cleanser didn’t get. Now you can apply thin serums, like hyaluronic acid, which helps hydrate your skin. Last, apply moisturizer and SPF. When applying products, be gentle on your skin — don’t be rough when rubbing products in.
While these steps apply to everyone, the specific treatments you should get in addition to your skincare and the products you use will change with age. As you get older, you’ll want to use a broad-spectrum sunscreen SPF 30 or higher every day, for example.
SKINCARE AT NIGHT
At night, it’s time to remove all your makeup and grime from the day so you can curl up and relax for a good night’s sleep. Skincare at night has different goals than a morning regimen. In the evening, focus on treating skincare concerns, such as acne scarring or redness, and hydrating your skin.
Start by removing your makeup. Then, double cleanse to make sure all makeup is removed from your skin. Next, apply toner, serums, retinol (to reduce the look of fine lines and wrinkles), and moisturizer. It’s a simple but highly effective regimen.
