Tips For Preventing Dry, Irritated Skin In The Winter

Dry, irritated skin is more common in the winter because cold air holds less moisture (humidity). When you combine the lower humidity with a move indoors to dry, heated air, moisture is pulled directly from your skin. That weakens your skin, making it more prone to flaking, redness, and irritation.

However, simple daily habits can make a big difference for your skin during the winter. Use these tips for hydrated, smooth skin this winter.

EXFOLIATE YOUR SKIN
Exfoliating should be a key step of your winter skin care regimen. Regular exfoliation removes dead skin cells that can make the skin feel rough and dry. Exfoliating creates a smoother texture, which will help your skincare products absorb better and work more effectively.

You should exfoliate your face after you cleanse it, but before applying toner and moisturizer. Just be sure to avoid over-exfoliating — once or twice a week is often enough. Additionally, pay special attention to areas such as your elbows, knees, and heels, which can become especially dry and rough. Use gentle exfoliants, like soft scrubs, to avoid disturbing your skin’s natural barrier, and choose mild, fragrance-free cleansers to avoid stripping away the natural oils on your skin.

HYDRATE AND MOISTURIZE OFTEN
In the summer, when you’re hot and sweating, drinking water feels natural. In the winter, it might take a little more effort, but it’s just as important for your entire body. By drinking plenty of water throughout the day, you’ll help keep your skin hydrated from the inside out.

As for moisturizing — another part of your regimen that should stick around all year — winter is the time to swap your everyday, lightweight moisturizers for something thicker and more moisturizing. Apply your thickest moisturizer before bed so it has time to absorb overnight, and put on lotion immediately after bathing or washing your hands to lock in moisture.

Running a humidifier in your home during the winter can help, but it’s a good idea to invest in a hydrometer so you know exactly how much humidity is in your air.

USE WARM WATER, NOT HOT
Hot water can feel nice when it’s cold outside, but it can also strip away your skin’s natural oils, leading to drier skin. Use warm water for bathing, washing your face, and washing your hands. Then, pat your skin dry gently and apply moisturizer afterwards to seal in moisture.

Additionally, while it may be tempting to take a long, hot shower in the winter to warm up after being out in the cold, opt instead for a shorter shower to minimize water loss from your skin (and help out your water heater!).

STAY CONSISTENT
Once you notice your preventative measures working, don’t stop. Consistency is key to keeping your skin healthy and hydrated all winter long.

Small, consistent habits can make a huge difference in keeping your skin comfortable all year. Remember, prevention is easier than repair!
